Havering event held in honour of Refugee Week.
Havering Mayor Councillor Stephanie Nunn attended a special event held on 20 June to mark Refugee Week.
The event was organised by Havering’s Resettlement and Crisis Response Team and gave our Mayor the opportunity to meet many people including a lady who appeared on the Ukraine’s version of Britain’s Got Talent.
Councillor Nunn spoke at the special event stating:
“Refugee Week is the world’s largest arts and culture festival celebrating the contributions, resilience and creativity of refugees and people seeking sanctuary. This year, 2023, is the 25th anniversary of Refugee Week and its theme is Compassion.
Since its inception in 1998, Refugee Week has brought millions of people together through a vibrant programme of arts, cultures, sports, and educational events centred around World Refugee Day on 20th June. These initiatives, alongside media and creative campaigns, aim to connect people from different backgrounds beyond labels, as well as encourage understanding of why people are displaced, and the challenges they face when seeking safety.
Havering is an open and compassionate borough, taking care of its people and fostering relationships between new and existing residents alike.
I would like to thank Rachel Watson and the Resettlement and Crisis Response Team for arranging this event today, it is important to get people together for all sorts of reasons. I thank the Team too for the specialist help they give to new arrivals to our borough: helping them to settle, giving assistance on school applications, welfare, the cost of living and general support.
I would also like to thank those that have chosen Havering to be their new home. I would especially like to thank anyone choosing to share personal stories with us today, it is not an easy thing to do.
We welcome you all to join our community in the London Borough of Havering.”
