Brave off duty officer who tackled knife wielding thief highlights the work police officers do daily on our streets.
PC Nick Fox has been praised for not only confronting armed thieves stealing mobile phones, but also detaining them whilst off duty, but ultimately was he just doing his job?
PC Nick from the Central East Command Unit, spotted the two male youths on Sunday 23 April on their bikes looking to snatch mobile phones.
He called out to them, when one of the youths produced a knife and began waving it at him.
The off duty officer then alerted local CCTV officers, the Robbery Taskforce and Response Units. He then spotted the youths again who appeared to target a lone female. He shouted across to alert the victim, when one of the males got off his bike, approached him and produced a knife from his bag.
The youth then saw the Robbery Taskforce officer arrive and got back on his bike, pursued by PC Nick on foot.
A member of the public then assisted officers by pushing the youth from his bicycle allowing Nick to move in and detain him.
Police officers are very rarely praised, but very frequently criticised. The actions of PC Nick are indeed brave, but as every police officer will acknowledge, he was just doing his job.
Being a police officer means you are never really off duty as PC Nick has proven and when a situation arises such as it did, a police officer will always respond.
It is right to acknowledge this officer’s actions as he not only took on a suspect on his own, but also one armed with a knife. His actions are indeed brave and they highlight the work the majority of our officers do day in and day out across our streets.
To all those who will add their comments of ‘he was just doing his job’, yes he was just doing his job and this is the work our officers embark on daily. They do tackle knife wielding robbers, they do pursue thieves on foot and as they know, they are never off duty.
Let us appreciate the fact that there are some fantastic police officers across our communities whose work is vital and much needed.
Well done to PC Nick, your actions were brave and you have highlighted how much work police officers do, that chooses to be frequently ignored.
