Residents at the end of Victoria Road, Romford, near Heath Park Road, are angry that they have been left without street lighting for nearly five months.

Following street works in January 2023, the street lights in Victoria Road near Monkwood Close have not been operational. This has left residents literally in the dark, with some too frightened to go out, especially in the winter months.

Residents have contacted Havering Council, who say the lights are out due to a UK Power Network supply fault. The fault was reported to UK Power Network in March, but the lights have still not been repaired, with UKPN claiming they are the Council’s responsibility.

Councillor Judith Holt, Local Ward Councillor for St. Alban’s Ward, who has been helping the residents, said: “It is disgraceful that these street lights have been out-of-order for five months. There are a number of older residents and young families living in this end of Victoria Road and Monkwood Close, plus people regularly walk along this stretch to reach the bus stops. We are regularly reminded about the safety of women and girls, so how is this helped by keeping the lights broken for five months? This is a health and safety issue which needs resolving as soon as possible.”
