‘Walk It Out’-A campaign created to end violence against women and strengthen their voices.
In 2021 after lockdown, April Mehmet created ‘Walk It Out’- a campaign to end male violence against women and to strengthen their voices.
Two years on, and April is still working tirelessly across the east London communities to put the voices of women first and help empower them.
“We provide intervention, workshops, activites and a platform to help build confidence in women,” tells us April.
“We are based in Redbridge, but work across east London where our aim is to educate both men and women from a young age.
“Women are being murdered, raped and assaulted regularly and it is so important to work together as a community, both men and women to educate each other on how to stop violence against women.
“The key is about raising awareness from an early age, promoting women to stand up for themselves.”
April runs self defence classes, first aid session and workshops with the aim to build women’s confidence.
“We need women to stand up for themselves. We know there are many women out there who do not report abuse due to fear or cultural issues, but we must work together as a community and tackle this.
“Everyday young girls and women face harassment and violence in our communities. Street harassment is an issue in every society but misogyny and sexual harassment in public has been so normalised that females find it difficult to speak up.
“Walk it out is an advocate and voice for the voiceless.”
April has really dedicated her time to supporting and campaigning for women for the past few years.
“We should be able to walk anywhere, anytime, without the fear of being attacked.
“We all need to unite together in making our communities a safer place to live in, working together in keeping residents safe and setting positive examples in every ward and borough,” finished April
A special walk is taking place on Monday 26 June at Valentines park starting at 7pm. This is an empowerment walk where everyone is asked to please come and join, and help stop violence against women and girls.
Well done to April for all her incredible work and fighting the battle to stop women being abused and murdered. Please come and join in this walk next month.
