Hospital Hero Given Civic Award By Havering’s Mayor.
For twenty five years Jeffrey from Hornchurch has been volunteering at King George’s and now Queen’s Hospital in Romford. Jeffrey really is a community champion.
He arrives at Queen’s hospital for 6.30 am where he collects old laundry, helps make beds, chats with patients, serves breakfast and even feeds some patients. He also serves lunches, helps shave gentlemen, and makes many cups of tea and coffee. He is always on hand to provide a smile for patients and staff.
Now, Jeffrey has been rightly rewarded after giving up so many years of his time to help others in need and has been presented with a civic award by Havering’s Mayor Councillor Trevor McKeever.
“After retiring I realised that there were many people worse off than me. I began to volunteer at King George’s first and now I am at Queen’s hospital. I see just how stressed staff are and how busy they are.
“For me I enjoy talking to patients about their war years or their family. Being able to help them the best way I can either by feeding them or helping to shave them.
“I love doing it and find it so rewarding to be able to help others.”
Jeffrey was put forward for the award by Elm Park Councillor Stephanie Nunn. Councillor Nunn told the Havering Daily:
“I nominated him because he is a very modest and kind person who has volunteered in our hospitals for over 20 years – Goodmayes, King George’s and currently Queen’s Hospital.
“He has provided transport, helped patients with their meals and shaving amongst other things. He is always willing to help others a really good community person who thoroughly deserved the award.”
In response Jeffrey added, “I was very proud to receive this award and it was great to meet so many people who have done such good work in our community.
“I find my work very rewarding and thoroughly enjoy doing it.”
Well done Jeffrey! You really are a community hero!
