The Dagenham and Rainham MP Jon Cruddas today writes in the Havering Daily on the increase in violent crime and fatal stabbing of a teenager in Dagenham.

Urgent action must be taken to prevent further tragedies on the streets of Dagenham and Chadwell Heath. Over the Coronation weekend one young man was murdered on Dagenham Heathway and another young man is in hospital with life threatening injuries following separate knife attacks.

Lots of residents have contacted me about the incidents that occurred over the weekend at Dagenham Heathway, resulting in a young man tragically losing his life, and at Chadwell Heath. My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim at this deeply saddening time.

There is understandably concern and worry that incidents like this could occur in such a public space, and I agree with the many residents who have said there needs to be more action to tackle violent crime of this nature. We need a route through this, and I will be urging a more proactive approach.

In the coming weeks I will be meeting with the Borough Commander to find out what actions are in place to ensure local people feel protected and the police are held to account.

Margaret Mullane, Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Dagenham and Rainham told the Havering Daily: “ Last week I met with over 50 people from community groups from across Dagenham and Rainham. Their overwhelming priority expressed to me was the need to increase policing and build community safety. The tragic events of the Coronation weekend renew my determination to press for a greater police presence on our streets and public transport hubs.

We need this action so that more families are spared the terrible grief of losing loved ones to knife and other violent crime. “
