Labour Representatives Lay Wreath For ANZAC Day.
Residents braved the rain on Sunday to lay a wreath at the Dovers Farm Estate’s memorial service. The estate, like other parts of the borough, has an association with the Australian and New Zealand troops that served in the First World War – known as the ANZAC’s – there is always a wreath laid on the Sunday before ANZAC Day – 25th of April.
Local Councillor Trevor McKeever, Havering’s Mayor, thanked the standard bearers from the Royal Naval Association and Merchant Navy that kindly joined, and reminded residents of the fact that the men and women that fought and died, did so for our continuing freedoms.
Dagenham Councillor Margaret Mullane attended on behalf of Jon Cruddas MP, and spoke of the local connection, including the convalescent hospital that used to stand in Hornchurch which hosted many of the ANZAC troops, and the St Andrews Church graveyard where some are interred to this day.
Councillor Matt Stanton, a resident of the estate, was pleased to see a good turnout despite the rain and paid tribute to local resident and veteran John Grant, who led the ceremony on behalf of residents.
