A Taste of Ramadan – Experiencing the Significance of Iftar
On Sunday evening (16th April), the Havering Daily was welcomed into the Harris Academy in Rainham to attend an iftar event, where Muslims were breaking their fast during the holy month of Ramadan
As the sun set and the call to prayer rang out, a warm and welcoming atmosphere descended upon the room. It was the time for Iftar, the meal that breaks the fast during the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims around the world.
The Havering Daily was invited to the Iftar event where attendees were breaking their fast with dates, water, and prayer. It was a humbling experience to witness this sacred tradition, where individuals came together to share a meal and celebrate their faith.

Following the breaking of the fast, attendees were invited to partake in a variety of cuisines, from traditional Indian and Chinese dishes to modern favorites like burgers. The choice of food reflected the diversity of those present and was a testament to the inclusivity and openness of the event.
As I joined the attendees in breaking bread, I was struck by the sense of community and camaraderie that permeated the room. Despite coming from different backgrounds and walks of life, everyone was united by their shared commitment to their faith and their desire to connect with others.
The Iftar event was a powerful reminder of the importance of coming together in times of difficulty, and of the strength that can be found in unity. As I left the event, I felt grateful for the opportunity to witness this sacred tradition and to share in the sense of belonging and togetherness that it engendered.
