Extra Funding Given To Repair Potholes In Spring Budget Not Applicable To Havering.

In the spring budget the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced an extra £200 million to be allocated to tackling what he called ‘the curse of potholes.’ However, it was stipulated that the extra funding was not applicable to any London borough as that comes under the domain of Transport For London.

Cabinet Member for parking Councillor Barry Mugglestone told the Havering Daily:

“No London boroughs have been earmarked for the extra funding which is very disappointing. The government have said it is up to TfL to fix potholes across London. However, TfL have always clearly stated that they do not repair potholes across our streets, so as such we are left out.

“We are very disappointed in this latest decision and we will be lobbying the government to see what we can do.”

In response to this ongoing pothole situation, TfL’s Director of Network of Management and Resilience Carl Eddleston told the Havering Daily: “A sustainable long term funding arrangement for all of London’s roads, similar to that provided by Government to other major cities in the UK, is essential to ensure that road network continues to be safe and plays a vital role in London’s economic recovery. Safety is our top priority and we work hard to ensure our road network is safe and fit for purpose. TfL is responsible for repairs to London’s network of red routes only and funding for the maintenance of borough roads is the responsibility of London’s councils.”

Transport for London have always been clear that they do not repair potholes across borough roads and this lack of funding once again has put further pressure on London councils who are already struggling.
