A Hornchurch mum is angry at the treatment of her son after he was given an hour detention for not having two pens and two pencils in his pencil case at Hornchurch High School.

The Year 7 pupil was issued the detention last week, despite having a pen and pencil to use in class.

His mum, who did not wish to be named told the Havering Daily: “We packed his bag and I had a quick look in his pencil case and everything seemed correct.

“I then received a message from the school saying that my son had a detention for missing equipment. I contacted the teacher involved and asked why my son had an hour’s detention when he did have a pen to write with and probably lost his pen at school.

“I then emailed the school informing them that my son would not be attending the detention.”

The mum is angry at the way her son is being treated and that he always loved school, but now struggles to go everyday.

The mum continued: “It really is hard getting him to school each morning. He used to love school but now he has become very withdrawn and does not want to go to school anymore. This has really impacted his mental health.”

Hornchurch High School has recently been labelled a prison and the mum insists that this is what the school has turned into.

“Pupils are given exit tickets at the end of the lesson and my son asked his friend as he had not understood some of the points in class. He was then given a detention and as he did not attend, he was then put into isolation for a day. No hot food is allowed for pupils in isolation and as my son is quite difficult when it comes to meals, he went without food all day.

“It really has turned into a prison. I am very worried about the impact it is having on his mental health. My son has always enjoyed going to school, but now everyday is a struggle getting him to school. Every morning he says to me ‘mum do I really have to go?’. I can see that he is not happy.

“He is a well behaved boy, not one that goes to school to start trouble. This is not fair treatment of pupils. They shouldn’t be scared to go to school.”

The detention has now been retracted by the school.

A spokesperson for Hornchurch High School told the Havering Daily :

“Every member of our school not only wants the very best for our students from an academic perspective, but we also are committed to ensuring that our community is one where every child is happy and can thrive.

“As part of this, over the last few months we have brought in new expectations to ensure that we are addressing things that have been disrupting learning. Evolving a school’s culture, however, takes time. Our staff have to adapt to implementing new rules and standards, and our students have to adapt to the requirements too. Where things haven’t been implemented fairly, then we will acknowledge and address them immediately.

“We have been really pleased with how far things have moved forward in a short period of time, and thank parents for their immense support. We will continue to improve further based on the feedback of our students and community. We are, for example, in the process of reviewing our marking policy to ensure students get the very best feedback to improve their learning.”

Well Barry things have moved on from your day!
Hornchurch High school is absolutely ridiculous with the sanctions!
The teaching quality this new term is LOW!
Lots of inexperienced teachers have joined the school with not alot of interaction, probably why the head teacher feels compelled to dish out petty sanctions continuously!
I am extremely disappointed with the attitude of the head teacher it’s all about discipline rather than education. She certainly needs to find a balance & fast as the schools reputation is becoming negative!
