Trees for Havering reaches its tree planting target
The borough of Havering in London is getting a greener and healthier environment thanks to a tree-planting campaign that is making a difference in the community. The Trees for Havering campaign, launched in November 2021 through the Havering Daily, aims to plant thousands of trees across the borough and improve the air quality, biodiversity, and overall well-being of residents.
The campaign’s efforts are led by a team of dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to plant as many trees as possible each season. With the help of local residents and businesses, the Trees for Havering team has planted 11,000 new trees so far this season, and with 2 events left, has smashed its 10,000 season target. This is on top of the 6,000 trees they planted last season.
Ross Elliott, a leader of the Trees for Havering campaign, expressed his gratitude to the volunteers who have made the project possible. He said, “We are so thankful for the support and hard work of our volunteers who have made this campaign a success. Together, we are creating a greener and healthier environment for the community.”
Adam Ozbek, who leads Trees for Havering alongside Ross added, “It is always amazing to have so many volunteers who share our passion for planting trees attend our events. Together we have made a real difference and everyone should be proud. A special thanks to our supporters including Havering Council, The Woodland Trust, TCV – The Conservation Volunteers, Ahern Waste Management & Recycling Services, The Havering Daily, Rainham BID, Stubbers Adventure Centre, the staff at Belhus Woods Country Park, and the Pinches Trust.”
The benefits of planting trees in urban areas are significant. Trees help to reduce air pollution, absorb carbon dioxide, provide shade and cooling in the summer, and support biodiversity by providing habitats for birds and insects. Furthermore, green spaces are known to improve mental health and well-being, which is crucial in a busy and densely populated city like London.
The Trees for Havering campaign is a fantastic example of how individuals and communities can come together to make a positive impact on the environment. By planting trees, the campaign is not only creating a greener and healthier environment for the residents of Havering, but it is also contributing to the fight against climate change.
