Havering Marks Homes For Ukraine Anniversary.

Yesterday, (14 March) marked the one year anniversary since the launch of the UK Government Homes for Ukraine scheme.

Across the country, extraordinary people are transforming the lives of those who have fled the war in Ukraine by welcoming them into their own homes and community.

Over 116,000 Ukrainians have arrived safely in the UK under the Homes for Ukraine scheme to date, with generous hosts in Havering contributing to that effort.

At the launch of the scheme, Havering Council set up its own dedicated Homes for Ukraine team with the aim of responding to the crisis and helping Ukrainians access a better quality of life in the borough.

This also included the launch of a bespoke one-stop shop for Ukrainian refugees arriving in the borough. The one-stop shop – set up in partnership with YMCA Romford provides vital support by bringing together different Council services and local partners to provide essential help to get Ukrainian guests in Havering set up for a new life in the UK.

The Homes for Ukraine team continue to work with local partner organisations to provide language, educational and employment support that helps to integrate Ukrainians while they develop independent lives.

Mariana Nakonechna, who fled from her home in Ukraine last year, now supports other Ukrainians living in the borough as part of the Council’s resettlement team.

Mariana said:

“This past year has been difficult for those leaving Ukraine, missing their home, family and friends, with the language barrier also making it difficult to transition.

“It is an honour to work with the Council and help fellow Ukrainians to have a positive experience in Havering.”

Councillor Ray Morgon, Leader of Havering Council, said: 

“I am pleased Havering has been able to contribute so much to the Homes for Ukraine scheme since its launch last March.

“Coming to a new country out of necessity rather than choice must be incredibly overwhelming and we know many arriving from Ukraine have been through a horrific ordeal.

“We are committed to helping the people of Ukraine who need a new place to call home.”

As the war continues, the people of Ukraine still need help and the Council are welcoming more hosts to come forward to support re-matching of guests who need somewhere safe to stay.
