International Women’s Day event held at HASWA.
A special International Women’s Day lunch was held at Havering Asian Social and Welfare Association in Elm Park yesterday 8 March. The event was hosted by Havering’s Deputy Mayor and Elm Park Councillor Stephanie Nunn and included many different women.
The speakers included Mandeep Brach, Shanta, Cllr Stephanie Nunn, Daljit, Surinder Sedha and Manjit Singh Project
Mandeep spoke about her experience as a member of BAME progressing in her career at the House of Lords, Surinder spoke of life coming from Nairobi with a baby and her move to east London. Shanta spoke to the group about women’s struggles in India and Daljit read a poem in Urdu which highlighted how women are the colour of life.
Councillor Nunn told the Havering Daily:
I was very proud to have the opportunity to host the event and introduce each speaker. We held the inaugural lunch for International Women’s Day last year and are pleased to continue the tradition. It is important to celebrate women’s achievements and hear women’s voices.
“I reminded everyone of the Suffragettes who helped women achieve the vote in 1928, although New Zealand were the first country to give women the vote. I spoke of Rosa Parks who refused to vacate her seat on the bus for a white man and finally of my mother who is the most inspirational woman to me.”
