Margaret Mullane visits Rainham Royals ‘warm hub’.
On Thursday 23rd of February, Margaret Mullane the Labour Prospective Parliamentary candidate for Dagenham and Rainham, visited Rainham Royals Youth Centre to see their new “warm hub.”
The warm hub opened on Thursday 2nd February at the Royals Youth Centre and is open to all ages. People can stay the entire day, get involved with the various activities or simply read a book with a with a warm drink in a warm area, or just pop in for a quick tea and biscuit. The activities range from painting to cooking, to mindfulness workshops. Free Lunch and refreshments are provided, and if you like the lunch, you can even take a printed recipe home with you.
Whilst Margaret was there with staff member Fay, they saw the variety of activities dotted around the hall from rock painting to knitting, a pool table and baby sensory area to a table dedicated to board games. The staff and volunteers were extremely friendly and took the two on a mini tour explaining how the warm hub works and what they provide for the local community.
The warm hub is funded by Havering Council, and has already seen huge numbers come through the door. During February half term the warm hub see 75 people come in throughout the four hours it was opened which is fantastic seeing as they had only been open for one week at this point.
Margaret told the Havering Daily: “I was blown away by the warm hub scheme at The Royals Youth Centre. I spoke with one of the managers of the youth centre Paula who introduced me to the staff and volunteers who were all very welcoming. The food smelt delicious and the tea was a great cuppa! It’s a sad state of affairs that in 2023 we are needing warm hubs within our communities but I am so impressed with the hard work and dedication the youth centre have shown to get Rainham’s warm hub up and running. I spoke with Jon Cruddas MP and he agreed that the hub have the full support of the MP’s office.”
If you would like to visit Rainham’s warm hub simply turn up to The Royals Youth Centre opposite Tesco’s Rainham anytime between 10-2 every Thursday where you will be welcomed by staff and volunteers waiting to offer a warm drink in a warm space.
