Anti ULEZ expansion protest gathers more momentum as thousands gather across London.
‘Of course I want clean air for my children, but I’m a single mum struggling as it is to feed my children. I rely on my car to get my children to school and get to work after. If this is forced through, I do not know what to do. I will be forced to get into further debt,’ says Claire from Romford.
Thousands descended upon Trafalgar Square on Saturday for another anti ULEZ expansion protest. Protesters were also given the opportunity to march up to Downing Street to make their voices heard against this scheme that is due to start in August this year.
“I’m sad when I read people’s comments on social media about us protesters,” continues Claire. “No one here is against clean air. I have two children at school and also want clean air, but how am I going to do it? I can just about get by, it is already a struggle, I cannot afford any extra, and this will mean I will lose my car or have to pay £12.50 a day. I can’t afford either so what am I going to do? I thought Labour would be the ones who understood this cost of living crisis.”
The feeling of anger and disappointment was felt by the majority who attended the protest, they felt they were completely being ignored.
“I have come from Essex and although this does not apply to us, it will impact us as we work across outer London boroughs daily,”said John. “If this scheme will come in, then the business I work for which is a small family run company, may well face closure. This is why I have come here today.”
Havering Residents Association Councillors and members Councillors Graham Williamson, Gillian Ford,Oscar Ford, Dave Godwin, Laurence Garrad, alongside Carol Baker were also at the event to talk to the many who came to make their objections heard.
These protests are clearly picking up momentum as more and more people attend each month to voice their objections.
