A teenager’s life was saved thanks to the quick thinking actions of teachers at the New City College and the Daniel Baird bleed kit

A student who was attacked as he walked near shops in Ardleigh Green Road, Hornchurch on Tuesday owes his life to quick-thinking staff at New City College.

The boy suffered stab wounds when he was attacked in the street by two men. The attackers were not students at the college.

His friends helped him back to the safety of the college where members of staff immediately put their first aid knowledge into practice and managed to partially stem the bleeding using the bleed kit that had recently been donated by the Ricky Hayden Memorial charity.

Staff called the ambulance and the student was taken to hospital for emergency treatment. Deputy Principal Ian Budge traveled with the student in the ambulance. The student’s condition is now stable.

As soon as staff became aware of the incident, the college was closed to protect the safety of all students, and lessons for the afternoon were canceled. The road was cordoned off by police for a short time as forensic officers worked at the scene. The road reopened in the afternoon and the college was open for lessons on Wednesday morning.

Principal Janet Smith said: “Thankfully, our student is stable and being cared for in hospital, thanks to the rapid first aid action taken by members of our staff. I am immensely proud of them. In a highly tense situation, they were incredibly calm and their actions and care undoubtedly helped to save the student’s life.

“This incident has had a profound impact on all of us and we are hoping our student will make a swift recovery.

“Making students feel safe and supported in college is part of our daily work. It is humbling to be reminded that when a student was in crisis, they knew the college was a place of safety where there would be staff to help.

“We are urging the wider community to come together to support us in the important work we do with young people. We work tirelessly to raise aspirations, support, provide equal opportunity, educate and prepare young people for their futures. We believe this is key in tackling the current challenges we all face in our community.”

Anyone with information about the incident or the suspects is asked to contact the police on 101 or tweet @MetCC and quote CAD2318/21Feb. You can also provide information anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

I have seen so much false information and some really terrible comments on local social media after yesterday’s knife attack on our local road. This article puts it into perspective. The college is NOT the cause of all the problems on our streets. College staff saved this boy’s life. Lots of us have our children at the college and we are very happy with their education. New City College staff and students if you’re reading this – please know that it’s a small minority of (very stupid) people making stuff up to have a say on social media, and most of us think you’re great.

I’ve lived in this boro for 20 years and where’s there young people there will be some that cause agg. It’s worrying that so many of us living here think our own kids are angels and all this is caused by ‘outsiders’ brought in by the college. From what I’m reading the college was the safe place and the staff responded brilliantly. Why so many keyboard warriors are saying to close the close is beyond me. Why would you want to close something that is trying to help kids? We should look to our council to make sure our streets are safe from wrong uns. What are they doing with out council tax? Not spending it on policing for sure. My kids went there and we never had a problem.
