Margaret Mullane-A people’s person ready to stand for her community.
The Havering Daily chats with Labour Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Councillor Margaret Mullane.
Margaret Mullane has some pretty big shoes to fill as she stands to replace Jon Cruddas, the Dagenham and Rainham MP at the next General Elections. Having spoken to Margaret recently, we can state if anyone can fill Jon’s shoes, it really is Margaret.
She is a straight talking no nonsense lady who is very much a people’s person. She has lived all her life between Dagenham and Havering and has worked the last fifteen years as Mr Cruddas’ office manager, so is no stranger to the challenges of politics.
Margaret joined the Labour Party in her 20s and stood as a councillor for the Village ward area in Dagenham in 2010, where she is still to this day the local councillor.
“Jon convinced me to stand and told me he would support me. He has guided me and I have learnt so much from him. I know it won’t be easy as this is a marginal seat,” tells us Margaret.
“Politics can change so quickly and the polls are often wrong. It is important though that we listen to the public and more importantly that we can actually offer what they want. When I go door knocking, I listen to what the people are telling me and they want to know how we can make a difference.
“There are so many key issues at the moment that are important to people. Obviously the cost of living crisis is high on the list as there are so many out there really struggling.
“Lack of proper policing, the poor state of the NHS, Launders Lane and of course now the ULEZ expansion are all important issues people in the community are worried about.”
Margaret was a Cabinet Member for four years so has spent a lot of her time working with senior police leaders and trying to get more officers for Havering.
“Policing is a key topic and myself and Jon have been working hard to address this.
“I have also been working with the families of the Stephen Post murders, trying to get justice for them.”
Margaret is also keen to have more affordable housing for her community.
“There is way too much unaffordable housing for people. What we need is traditional council renting properties that are achievable for our community. Our young people can’t afford any forming of housing at the moment.
“Being Jon’s office manager and going out regularly door knocking I can see the reality that is impacting our community. The elderly that are struggling to put their heating on. They have worked all their life and our now sitting and watching the metres as they can’t afford to heat their homes.”
Margaret really is a people’s person who listens to her community and puts them first.
Jon has been the MP for Dagenham and Rainham for the last 21 years and his departure will be a sad loss to many. Margaret is the best choice to replace Jon and will also be a politician who stands for her community.
