Havering residents are waking up to news that an earthquake has rocked neighbouring Essex leaving houses shaking.

The quake was confirmed by the British Geological Society who concluded that a mild tremor had shaken the area outside of Chelmsford just after 5 am yesterday.

Residents living in the area reported their whole house shaking and the tremors sounding like a bomb. Some thought it was a sonic boom, whilst others were confused to what the loud bang noise was.

It is believed it was a magnitude of between 2.5 and 5.4 meaning it is expected to cause minor damage.
