Rainham residents living near East Hall Lane were angry to learn that an acid spillage had taken place yesterday. Dog walkers returned home to wash dog paws after walking on the road and are once again faced with more toxic spillage.

One residents wrote: “More hazardous chemicals spilt here. It was bad enough when we had the previous company here discharging slurry onto the fields.

“I think its time the council get rid of all these firms that have been refused planning permission.”

It was the council’s street cleaning services that were clearing fly tipping on East Hall Lane, that noticed the leakage from one of the containers and immediately called the London Fire Brigade and closed the road off.

A Havering Council spokesperson told the Havering: “Our street cleaning services were in East Hall Lane clearing a fly-tip and noticed a leakage from a container. For health and safety purposes, they closed off the road and called London Fire Brigade to assess the situation.

“The LFB has since requested that the Council calls in specialist contractors to come down to the site to clear the spillage.

“The road remains closed while the clear-up takes place and we ask residents to avoid the area both on foot and in vehicles at this time.”
