Why women are still on the losing end.
A domestic violence victim, today writes in the Havering Daily.
In the early twentieth century women fought like lions to get the right to vote. Following hundreds of years of discrimination and inequality, women decided that their voice needed to be heard. These were difficult times and after very dark periods, women got the right to vote.
As dark as these times were, unbelievably here we are today, with the right to vote but still abused, raped, urinated on, locked in cupboards and our voices are completely disregarded.
On a walk with a friend, we recently met a a guy we both know and began conversing with him. He mentioned the current headline story of a male who has 43 charges against him, 20 for rape. He went on to state, “Well you women we know what you are like, all you have to do is sneeze and you cry rape.” My friend calmly responded, “He raped twenty women and urinated on them.” His response was, “Some women like that.”
This here is why our society needs serious looking at. As long as there are men out there who hear horror stories as we have all just witnessed and still firmly believe women ‘cry rape’, women will always be on the losing end.
My friend is also a victim of domestic violence, she endured years of physical abuse at the hands of her husband that left her with multiple serious injuries including a broken jaw where she had to drink from a straw, and eye that had come out of its socket and numerous broken ribs. These are the physical injuries, the list of mental health issues she still suffers as a result of her marriage, are even more heartbreaking.
All across the country today, there will be women going out to work facing difficult situations in the job environment. Women not taken seriously because they are women. Today, I am fortunate that my workplace does not involve misogyny, However, I am sad to report that it was just a few months ago that when responding to a call by a male in the political field, he greeted me by saying ‘Hello gorgeous’. I did wonder if he would have said this same phrase to my male colleague.
It is sadly a mind set that needs to be drastically altered. parents that must raise their sons to respect women and not treat them as objects there for their own service. Everyone has a right to play in helping to change this situation.
Zara Aleena was murdered by another monster. He went back and repeatedly kicked her and stamped on her. Why? Because Zara made the fatal mistake of trying to fight back. How dare she fight back, he had the right to rape an beat her according to Jordan McSweeney who even yawned in police interviews.
As darker days as we had before we had the right to vote, we are still in very dark periods. On one hand we are told that violence against women will be stamped out, but on the other hand we can see that when women do call horrific behaviour out and ask for help, it repeatedly falls on deaf ears.
We must work together as a society to fight against misogyny. It is not for women to always sit and question their behaviour, is my skirt too short? Is my top too low? Did I do something wrong? No you did not, it is a mindset that needs to be changed.
Just for a day, put yourself in a woman’s shoes and see the endless list of challenges and obstacles women face daily, then perhaps you can start to see things from the other side of the fence.
