‘Up the Heathway’ bid successful.

Levelling Up Bid Success for Dagenham Heathway.

In June 2022 the Dagenham and Rainham MP Jon Cruddas supported the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham in their round two levelling up bid “Up the Heathway” seeking funds to transform Dagenham Heathway. This week the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities confirmed that the bid had been successful, and the council had been awarded £10,883,068 for the project.

The Dagenham and Rainham told the Havering Daily: “For Dagenham residents going “up the Heathway” was once a visit to a local shopping area that served all the needs of the local community, but as the Member of Parliament since 2001 I have seen how the loss of major stores, reliance on online shopping, and the expansion of areas like Westfield have taken their toll.”

Jon added: “The success of this bid is excellent news and will help the council completely transform and redevelop the Heathway into a modern shopping centre, improving the existing residential space and transport infrastructure as well. Now that the finance is secured, I look forward to seeing the plans take shape.”

This bid focused on two key projects, firstly co-funding the acquisitions and development activities necessary to unlock and facilitate the major redevelopment of the Heathway Shopping Centre and Millard Terrace housing above. These proposals will ultimately create over 300 new homes and over 4,800 sqm of new attractive commercial space supporting the local economy and providing high quality, energy efficient, new homes meeting the Council’s affordability goals. 

The second part of the bid supported these development opportunities by bringing forward a programme of public realm and streetscape improvements designed to improve connectivity throughout the Heathway and promote pedestrian and cycle use. 

Margaret Mullane, Village Ward Councillor and PPC for Dagenham and Rainham said: “The Heathway falls in my ward, and over the years I have worked hard to deal with the various issues arising from both the residential and commercial elements. The project to redevelop the Heathway is one that I know is supported by local people in principle and this funding has made that possible. However, as with everything it is important that the community is consulted, and brought with on regeneration projects of this size.”
