Mawney ward councillor and popular former Mayor Dilip Patel has put his climbing shoes on ready for one of the biggest challenges of his life. Councillor Patel is going to climb 17,598ft to reach Mount Everest’s Base Camp 1. The challenge is completely self funded and will see Councillor Patel take on a life long ambition as an outdoor lover.

He is aiming to raise £1,000 for Hornchurch charity First Step. Councillor Patel told the Havering Daily:”Those with special needs and/or disabilities face mountain-size challenges everyday of their lives. I am sure that I can face just half a dozen days in the mountains to help make their struggles a little easier.

“It has been a life long ambition of mine to get to Base Camp 1, so if I can do it and raise money for charity as well, that would be fantastic.”

Councillor Patel was recognised as one of the best Mayors Havering has had and is a very active member of the community.
