A special service was held yesterday (Sunday January 22) on Coronation Gardens to remember National Holocaust Memorial Day.

Members of Romford Synagogue came to pay their respects to the many who lost their life in the Holocaust.

The service was led by Romford Rabbi Lee Sunderland who is a much respected member of the community. Poems were read by many locals, including Havering’s Leader of the Council, Councillor Ray Morgon, members of Havering Islamic Cultural Centre and a very moving speech was given by a relative of Holocaust survivor.

Rabbi Lee gave a very poignant speech were he said we must all take responsibility for the actions of our ancestors and make sure horrific events such as these never take place again.

The theme this year is ‘Ordinary People’, remembering the many who played such a vital part in the war and the many who lost their life helping others escape.

This was a very moving service to remember such a horrific event in our history.

The Havering Daily’s Charlie Keeble had the honour of lighting a candle in honour of all the people with disabilities who lost their life in the Holocaust.
