UK Medical Cannabis: A Controversial Treatment That’s Changing Lives
The use of medical cannabis is a contentious issue in the United Kingdom, with many people holding strong opinions on both sides of the debate. However, for those prescribed cannabis oil and flower for medical reasons, the experience of using this treatment can be quite different from what many might expect.
First, it is important to understand that in the UK, cannabis is classified as a Schedule 1 controlled substance, which means that it is considered to have no medicinal value and a high potential for harm. However, in recent years, there has been a growing body of evidence supporting the use of cannabis-based medicines for certain medical conditions. As a result, the UK government has made it possible for patients to access cannabis-based treatments through a special licensing scheme.
For those who are prescribed medical cannabis, obtaining the treatment can be a complex and often confusing process. Patients must first go through a rigorous assessment process with a specialist doctor, and the medication must be obtained from a limited number of authorised providers. Despite the legal status of medical cannabis, many patients still report feeling stigmatized and judged when they use the treatment, both by healthcare professionals and the general public.
When using medical cannabis, many patients report feeling a significant improvement in their symptoms and overall quality of life. For example, those with chronic pain conditions may find that cannabis oil or flower helps to reduce their pain and improve their mobility. Similarly, those with conditions such as multiple sclerosis or epilepsy may find that cannabis-based treatments help to reduce the frequency and severity of seizures.
A medical cannabis user from Rainham told the Havering Daily.
“I was shocked when my GP recommended medical cannabis to me as a treatment for my chronic pain and poor mobility caused by a broken back 5 years ago. I had been expecting to be prescribed more painkillers, which while they help with the pain, do not improve my mobility.
“But to my surprise, cannabis has been a game changer for me. Since starting to use medical cannabis, I’ve found it to be incredibly effective for managing both my pain and mobility. I have to consume it throughout the day, which can sometimes be difficult when I’m in public, as I sometimes get funny looks from people.
“Despite the fact that it’s legal for me to use medical cannabis in public, I’ve had people approach me and question my use of it. It can be frustrating to have to constantly explain that I’m allowed to use it, but I’m glad to have found a treatment that helps me manage my chronic pain and improve my mobility. I hope that as more people learn about the medical benefits of cannabis, the less stigma there will be around its use.”
