UK asylum system under incredible strain as record number of people arrive needing accommodation.
More than 37,000 asylum seekers placed in hotels as the system struggles to deal with record levels of arrivals.
It is believed that asylum seekers have been placed in three different locations across Havering by the Home Office as the system struggles to cope with record high levels arriving into the country. The new arrivals are currently being placed across many different hotels until appropriate accommodation is found.
A spokesperson for the Home Office told the Havering Daily: “The number of people arriving in the UK who require accommodation has reached record levels and has put our asylum system under incredible strain.
“The use of hotels is unacceptable, there are currently more than 37,000 asylum seekers in hotels costing the UK taxpayer £5.6 million a day.”
The Home Office did not confirm or deny that three hotels are being used across Havering as it does not comment on operational arrangements for individual sites used for asylum accommodation. The Home Office is engaging with local authorities as early as they can to ensure arrangements are safe for hotel residents and locals.
Hotels are a short term solution and the Home Office is urging local authorities to do all they can to help house people permanently.
