A Havering man has hit out at the local council after thirty pensioners were left without power over the weekend and very little response was offered from them.

Steve who was senior manager in the fire service, went to visit his 92 year old mum who lives at William Tansley House on Hacton Lane in Hornchurch and found that the power had gone out.

He told the Havering Daily: The power went out at 11.30am and I contacted UK Power Network who informed me that it should be back on by 3pm. The pensioners were then moved to a nearby hall where they could all be kept warm and have something to eat and drink. I bought my mum home with me.

“When we returned, we saw that the building was in total darkness and clearly the power had not come back on. I contacted the power company and they informed me that the power was due on at 6pm. At this stage the pensioners were all in the dark and had no access to hot food or drink. I contacted the council through the out of hours service and their response was woeful.

“As a former manager I am fully aware that they should have a working plan at a strategic level. I know that If I hadn’t collected my mum and bought her home with me, she wouldn’t have eaten all day. The communication with the council was awful, very poor. There were thirty vulnerable adults left in total darkness with no offer of blankets or access to hot drinks.

“UK Power then informed me that they could not access the building to undertake repair works, which means that they had no access to the key holder as they should have had.

“My mum has also lost £100 worth of food, as the power did not return until the following day.

“This really was a very poor response.”

Havering’s Leader of the Council Councillor Ray Morgon told the Havering Daily:

“This was clearly not a good situation and I will look into this straight away and find out why no one from the council was there.”
