Locals using the popular Tesco on Collier Row Lane, were concerned for the welfare of staff in the store after noticing the shop was particularly cold and that staff were wearing coats and scarves.

Not only were staff wearing coats inside, but shoppers left the store feeling cold and with runny noises!

One local shopper told the Havering Daily: “It was absolutely freezing in there, I saw staff wearing lots of layers. It’s not just cold due to the freezers, it’s more that that. One of the ladies on the til had a scarf on it was that bad!”

Another local shopper told the Havering Daily: “I left the store and my nose was running due to the cold, I felt so sorry for staff that have to work there in that cold. It was warmer outside than it was inside the store.”

The Havering Daily contacted Tesco who informed us that the store was ‘a bit chillier’ than usual and that their maintenance team were investigating the reasons why.

They have informed us that the temperature is back to normal now and are very sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Please see the statement from Tesco below:

A Tesco spokesperson said: “Our Collier Row Superstore was a bit chillier than usual this week and so whilst our maintenance team investigated and fixed the issue, some colleagues chose to wear extra layers on their shifts. We’re pleased to confirm the store is back to the usual temperature today and we’re sorry for any inconvenience caused.”
