Men’s Walk and Talk group launches in Upminster to help men talk about their mental health issues.
The lock down periods impacted the mental health of many of us across the country. However, figures clearly show that men are less likely to ask for help or report their mental issues than women and the number of suicides is much greater for men.
At the start of this year, Elm Park resident Scott began a walk and talk group across Southwark to encourage men to share their mental health problems.
Scott told the Havering Daily:
“I began walking during the lock down periods. I started to film videos of me walking and sharing my issues openly to promote others to start to do the same. The aim was to create a safe space for men to be comfortable to talk and share their mental health issues. There is much more of a stigma attached to men and their mental health and they often don’t feel at ease talking.”
Scott’s walk and talk group grew and soon many came to join in his walks.
“The group got bigger and I then decided to expand it to other boroughs. The need for groups like these are vital and so needed in our communities.”
Scott’s aim is to have a walk and talk group across each London borough and then build right across the country.
A Havering walk and talk group is being launched on Wednesday October 5, in Upminster. The walk starts at 6.30pm outside of the side entrance of Upminster station.
This is another first for Havering and a very positive step to help men come and join in these walks and have the opportunity to relax and start to open up about any issues they maybe experiencing.
