Dagenham and Rainham Labour Party Chair joins Royal Mail strike workers on the picket lines.
‘This isn’t just about our posties; I stand shoulder to shoulder with all working people who are fighting to defend their living standards. 2% is the equivalent of crumbs from the table.’
Last Thursday and Friday Communications Workers Union (CWU) members of the Royal Mail under took two days of strike action. CWU members stood on picket lines across Havering in protest over the poor pay increase they have been given.
During a time when the country is going through a cost of living crisis and inflation repeatedly increasing and reaching new all time highs, the 2% increase seems incomprehensible.
Chair of Dagenham and Rainham Labour Party Andrew Achilleos joined CWU members of the Romford picket lines to support them. He told the Havering Daily:
“On Thursday 8 and Friday 9 September CWU members at Royal Mail were on strike and I was proud to join them on the picket lines in Romford. Workers are taking industrial action in response to an imposed 2% pay rise, at a time when inflation is hitting record highs of 10.1% and Royal Mail bosses are pocketing £758m in profit.
“This isn’t just about our posties; I stand shoulder to shoulder with all working people who are fighting to defend their living standards. 2% is the equivalent of crumbs from the table compared to the massive £400m doled out to shareholders this year.
“When the impact of the Tories economic failure really starts to bite, coupled with soaring energy bills, decisions like this will force key workers from the frontline to the breadline.Labour has a plan to support families and tackle the cost-of-living crisis, but we can’t deliver it without an MP in Romford speaking up for the values of working people.
“Communities across Britain need a General Election now.”
