Previous Labour Parliamentary candidate Angelina Leatherbarrow today shares her view on the country’s new Prime Minister.

So, just when you think there couldn’t be a less suitable person to run the country than Boris Johnson, step forward Liz Truss. Having supported Johnson, voted with him and defended him right up until she sniffed power herself,  Liz Truss has become the Leader of the Conservative by playing to a really small audience and become the Prime Minister with a mandate of only 81,326 Conservative Party Members. That’s 0.1% of the British population. 99.9% of the British public have had no say on whether she is our Prime Minister or not, but I don’t think that will bother her. Liz Truss doesn’t believe in the people of this country either, she doesn’t believe in anything other than Liz Truss. The passionate Lib Dem that turned Tory. The Remain campaigner who became an ardent Brexiteer when it became politically profitable for her. We know that the Tory government don’t mind a U turn, but Liz seems to live on a roundabout.Beyond that, if you want to know what sort of Prime Minister she is going to be, just look at her voting record. In favour of restricting legal aid, of cutting Local Authority funding, reducing benefits and binning workers rights. Against bankers bonus tax, mansion tax and measures to prevent climate change. Some of her campaign promises of cutting taxes and “reviewing” workers rights show what she’s about. Her comments that she doesn’t believe in wealth distribution should set alarm bells ringing for all of us at a time when the wealth divide is getting bigger, the country falls in to recession and our poorest, most vulnerable are facing freezing or starving this winter.
The Conservatives have shown us over 12 years but especially in the last two years through the pandemic, that doing the decent thing doesn’t always come naturally, but I’m hoping that the new PM does do the the decent thing and calls a General Election as soon as possible so she can try to win on a mandate from the whole country, not just a few Tories who are so out of touch with the challenges of real people, that they think a new kettle is going to solve the winter energy crisis.
