On Friday 2 September Havering’s Deputy Mayor Councillor Stephanie Nunn and Mayoral Consort Councillor Barry Mugglestone raised the Merchant Navy Flag at the Town Hall and then made their way to the Royal British Legion in Elm Park to raise the Red Ensign there too.

Councillor Nunn paid tribute to all those who served in Merchant Navy:

“In recognition of their sacrifice in World War I, King George V bestowed the title of Merchant Navy on British merchant seafarers. They are often regarded as the forgotten and invisible navy community. Modern-day merchant seafarers are now responsible for delivering more than 90% of the U.K.’s imports and exports including food and other daily products and goods.

The Red Ensign is flown across the country to honourthe brave men and women of the Merchant Navy.

We pay tribute to the community, including personnel and their families, veterans and the cadet forces.

I also thank The Seafarers’ Charity which continues to promote and support those who work – or have worked – at sea, and their families.”
