‘We are in a knife crime war-why do they let the carnival take place when they know something will happen.’

Harold Hill bereaved mum says Notting Hill carnival should not have taken place whilst knife crime is at such a high level on our streets.

“Sadly we knew it was going to happen, the way knife crime is it was predictable”, says Peguy Kato not only a bereaved mother but also an anti knife crime campaigner who is desperately trying to stop youths going out armed with knives. “I don’t understand why organisers let it go on, whilst knife crime is an epidemic on the streets of London, events like this should not take place. This is a war, a knife crime war, do they not see how many children are dying? Do they not see the youths armed with machetes on our streets? These attacks and killings are now done brazenly in broad daylight, they don’t care. Of course a fatal stabbing was going to take place.”

Peguy Kato lost her son Champion Ghanda to knife crime on the streets of Newham in 2013, he was stabbed eleven times. Peguy had to watch his murder on CCTV during the trial, she has never recovered from his death and never will.

“I know it is a tradition for so many people here in London, but they need to look at what is happening around them and the fact that nobody cares. When you place so many people together in tight spaces such as the carnival does, violence is sadly going to happen and it did.

“It was stopped during Covid, well knife crime is a disease too and it needs to be stopped until these horrors start to stop. My children did not go. I asked them if they were attending and they were scared to go, they knew something was going to happen at this event.”

The bereaved mum spends much of her time on the streets of east London talking to our youth and finding out why they carry knives. “They are scared, they are scared to travel from one postcode to another in case they get stabbed. This is the reality. They are living most of their lives in fear and looking over their shoulder.”

Sadly on Monday evening as the carnival began to draw to a close a 21 year old man was fatally stabbed. Police officers as always were first on the scene and rushed to save his life against the odds.

The carnival saw 209 arrests, hundreds of stop and searches and of course the tragic fatal stabbing. 74 police officers were assaulted and heartbreaking news that a police horse collapsed and died.

“Children are going out armed with machetes and knives and yet our police officers are not armed. We are putting them in danger everyday. They are the ones first on scene and trying so hard to save our youth from dying.

“I know another child somewhere across London will lose their life again today or tomorrow and once again no one will care or speak out against these horrors.Until it impacts them, nobody cares.

“I’m sorry for the carnival organisers but until the knife crime war is properly tackled, events like this surely cannot go on.”
