Harold Hill 5 year old crowned ‘top mathlete’ in World Maths Day Global Challenge.

Gold medal winner, 5 year old Lewis from Harold Hill, who attends Drapers’ Maylands Primary School, is celebrating being crowned the ‘top mathlete’ in the UK reception year category of the World Maths Day (WMD) Global Challenge –  a worldwide competition involving 10 million young Mathletes from across 160 countries. Lewis, along with his Harold Hill classmates, pitted his wits and tested his mathematical prowess against his UK and global peers, while participating in engaging activities designed to highlight the wonder of numbers and most importantly make maths fun. He joins UK champions from nine other age group categories.

“I really love maths,” said 5 year old Lewis, “and love winning points.  It’s so exciting.”

Event organiser, Graham Frickers from 3P Learning, the creators of the Mathletics platform on which the global challenge is hosted said, “We’re delighted to be celebrating our fifteenth year of the WMD Global Challenge. During the 48 hour period when the challenge was open, we have calculated that the 10 million competitors attempted 1 billion questions. The WMD Global Challenge is a record breaker – it’s the largest online maths competition in the world.

“And while the competitors were busy engaging in the challenge, they were also practising and developing their maths skills and understanding, building their maths brains! Maths isn’t just about numbers, maths skills are skills for life – reasoning, creativity, abstract and spatial thinking, problem solving and communication skills.

“Kids from all over the UK competed against their peers from across the nation and the world – it’s truly a global celebration of maths. The competition is tough and I’m delighted to congratulate our 10 UK champion Mathletes for their incredible achievements.”

“I’m so proud of Lewis – he is a real star! All our children absolutely loved competing,” said Lewis’ teacher, Lysette Stepaniuk.

Each Mathlete completed twenty, 60 second live maths games according to their age and ability, with the top scorers posted in a Live Hall of Fame. As well as trophies for the winners and two runners-up, the winning Mathlete and school in each of the ten categories will receive a PlayStation 5 and a £200 voucher respectively.
