Pippa’s Army volunteers step in with Romford firefighters to save poor stranded hedgehog at Romford station.

Well done to two Pippa’s Army volunteers Sara Ayres and Leandra Winch who spent most of the day yesterday, Tuesday 12 of April saving a stranded hedgehog who had got himself stuck in a drain hole. The two crusading animal campaigners were called to Romford station following reports of a little hedgehog who had got himself caught under a drain hole.

Leandra told the Havering Daily: “We attended the station to see what we could do and with the help of TfL staff we managed to remove the top of the drains and some of the surrounding plastic. We also closed off the area.

“We then spent the next hour or so lying on the station floor trying to find ways to release the hedgehog from the very tight hole he had got himself in. We literally tried everything but we could not get him out. I then realised that it wasn’t going to be possible to achieve alone, so I called Romford Fire Station to see if there was a chance they could help me.”

Our fighters never stop at an opportunity to help the community and certainly like a challenge, so promptly arrived at the scene.

“Five of them came to help us straight away and arrived with a bag of tools. They carefully began to find ways to see what they could do and finally managed to release Reggie the Hedgie with no injuries.

“He was taken to Essex Wildlife Trust to be looked after.

“Having the fire brigade there to support us today when they didn’t have to, was truly heart warming and they did a fantastic job, I cannot thank them enough. The five firefighters were Jim, Alan, Matt, Dan and Toby from Romford White Watch.”

Well done to everyone one involved. Huge thank you to our firefighters who are amazing community champions and the ladies from Pippa’s Army. They do an amazing job in our community everyday, they are all volunteers who give up their own time to help countless animals. Not only rescuing animals but rehoming them.
