Trees for Havering campaign continues as hundreds of trees planted on Ferry Lane.
On the Saturday 12th of March, residents from all over Havering came together to plants hundreds of trees in Rainham as part of the Trees for Havering campaign.
A mixture of trees were planted on a piece of land managed by London Riverside BID to create a hedgerow that will support wildlife and biodiversity. These newly planted trees will contribute to their ‘1000 Trees’ initiative, which they have recently launched to bring some of the many benefits that native hedgerows are known to offer, including water conservation, noise and wind buffering, as a wildlife corridor providing essential nesting, forage and shelter for all sorts of creatures, and as a home to beneficial insects and pollinators.
Olga Astaniotis, from the London Riverside BID told the Havering Daily;
“Planting the hedgerows will help us strengthen the existing natural habitat in this little corner of wildlife paradise. Here, in the middle of London’s largest industrial Business Improvement District, dominated by huge buildings, HGVs and lorries, you’d think that wildlife wouldn’t have much of a chance to thrive, and yet on a small pocket of land between the Thames and the RSPB Rainham Marshes, we’ve discovered a rich and diverse eco-system of 100s of native flora and fauna species.
Whilst we’ve been developing plans to make the space more usable for the local workforce and community, we’ve learnt a lot about its ecological value and are making sure we do everything we can to preserve and enhance the natural habitat. Ross’ trees are such an important addition to our effort to preserve this piece of public realm for local people and for the native plants, insects, birds and creatures that call this place home.”
Well done to everyone involved and a huge thank you to the Woodland Trust and The Conservation Volunteers for supplying the trees.
