As the heat finally arrived across east London, the first summer fire in Rainham blazed for hours.

The local community came out to support and praise our London Fire Brigade firefighters, supported by firefighters from Kent and Essex, who battled nearly five hours in the sun to extinguish the blaze at the industrial estate on Ferry Lane.

Firefighters were called just after 1pm to what was initially a ten pump fire with over 70 firefighters at the scene. As the afternoon proceed, 125 firefighters were then tackling the blaze with 25 fire engines in Rainham.

Clouds of thick black smoke could be seen across Rainham as buses were on diversion and roads were closed due to the incident.

Rainham Councillor Sue Ospreay joined the Havering Daily on Ferry Lane where police officers were supporting firefighters. Councillor Ospreay visited the nearby Tesco store and thanks to store manager Jamie, was able to provide crates of bottled water for our firefighters.

Just before 6pm last night, the blaze was under control and the clouds of smoke began to die down.

London Fire Brigade had advised Rainham residents to keep windows and doors closed due to large amount of smoke coming from the fire.

Residents came out to praise all the firefighters involved, as they tackled the blaze for hours in full sun.

Thank you to London Fire Brigade firefighters, Essex Fire and Rescue and Kent Fire and Rescue for their incredible work yesterday. You are very much appreciated.
