Havering Celebrates Unsung Heroes in the New Year.

As the New Year’s Honours List is announced, the Havering Daily is proud to recognise some truly remarkable individuals whose dedication and selflessness make our borough a better place. Behind the scenes, these outstanding members of our community work tirelessly, often without recognition, putting Havering first.

Here is the Havering Daily list of our own 2025 Heroes!

Ian Pirie from Havering Friends of the Earth is a passionate champion for the environment. Those who know Ian recognise his tireless commitment to protecting our greenbelt and preserving Havering’s natural spaces.

Shelley Hart, leading the Havering Volunteer Bureau, has the community at heart. Her dedication is unmatched, supporting countless charities and always lending a hand at local events.

Manjit Singh from the Havering Asian Social and Welfare Association constantly gives to the community, feeding those in need and opening her doors to anyone who requires support.

Ripu and Sunny from the Fat Pizza are true community heroes. Their £1 pizzas have fed hundreds of residents, helping struggling families and bringing people together.

Ruth Kettle Frisby fought a David and Goliath battle to have the land on Launders Lane deemed contaminated, showing incredible courage and dedication for the community.

Catherine and Shaun Newton have tirelessly advocated for local residents on the same issue, with Catherine facing a life-threatening illness this summer yet continuing her fight.

Maxine Kemp from Sole Steppers works relentlessly to support women and combat violence against women and girls.

Sharon Atkins, our nutrition expert, tirelessly promotes health and wellbeing across Havering, helping residents make better lifestyle choices.

Our Mayor, Sue Ospreay, has been the heart and soul of the borough. Her energy, enthusiasm, and dedication have brought joy to countless residents.

Gary Hayes of PTSD 999 has worked selflessly to support members of the emergency services, and his work is life saving. he deserves endless praise.

Sue Hedges from the Ricky Hayden Memorial dedicates her life to helping others, despite her own personal loss after son was murdered. Sue is always the first to support all those in need and she does everything with a smile on her face against all odds.

The dedication of our police officers cannot go unnoticed. Chief Inspector Routley has driven the success of the Clear Hold Build scheme in Harold Hill. Inspector Connolly has achieved outstanding results tackling tool theft, and Sergeant Basit has been a constant presence in Rainham, supporting the local community.

Finally, much praise goes to community groups Harold Hill Deer Aid and Pippa’s Army, whose lifesaving work with animals is invaluable. You are true animal heroes and much praise goes to you all for saing the lives of endless animals.

Thank you to all of you. Your dedication, compassion, and commitment make Havering a better, safer, and stronger community. You are our list of Havering’s New Year Honours.
