Council’s day of action against fly-tipper bears fruit.
Barking and Dagenham Council has been leading the way in recent years in the battle against fly-tipping and recently held a day of action targeting key hotspots for dumping in the borough.
Officers from the Environment Enforcement and Street Cleansing Teams joined forces on Friday 3 December and visited five different locations including: Broad Street, Longbridge Road/Faircross Avenue, Station Parade, Barking, Ripple Road (Harrow Road shops) and Gordon Road/Wedderburn Road.
The successful operation saw two £400 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN) issued for businesses illegally depositing waste on the public highway at Ripple Road and Longbridge Road. £110 FPN was issued to a business on Faircross Avenue, for failing to comply with a waste receptacle notice and another £150 FPN issued for littering to a male on Wedderburn Road for dumping a box/bag on the public highway at Gordon Road.
In addition, one Waste Receptacle Notice is to be served, in accordance with S.47 Environmental Protection Act 1990 to a business on Longbridge and approximately 10-15 other environmental offences which officers will follow up on. A referral is also being made to the Police about a suspected brothel and also as part of the exercise, a resident suggested the installation of Eurobins which is being looked into.
Councillor Margaret Mullane, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “This is a great example of collaborative work where we are trying to address ongoing issues. Whether it be fly-tipping, littering or spitting, I can’t understand why anyone would want to make the streets they live on messy and dirty.
“Fly-tipping is not just an issue for Barking and Dagenham, it is a problem across the country, but we have been leading the way in trying to put a stop to it from bringing in fines of £400 fines and presenting our fortnightly Wall of Shame CCTV appeal.
As well as having one free tip in the borough, the council also offers a bulky waste collections service, where residents can get four items collected.
The council will be looking to run these operations regularly as it continues the fight against the people who believe it is okay to dump their rubbish on the streets.
