Rubbish tosser costs car owner a huge fee.

A Barking man has been fined over £1000 for failing to provide the details of two people caught littering from his car.

Council CCTV cameras caught two individuals dropping litter from a Vauxhall Astra, which was later discovered to belong to Mr Kwame Sarpong on 18 October 2019.

Under Section 17 of the Greater London Council Act 1972, Mr Sarpong was asked to provide the details of the two people caught committing the offence at the time.

However, despite being reminded he failed to do so and was summoned to court.

Sarpong, of Maybury Road, Barking did not attend the hearing at Barking Magistrates Court on Tuesday 9 March and, in his absence, was ordered to pay £1350 in fine, costs and a victim surcharge.

Councillor Margaret Mullane, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “As Mr Sarpong was the owner of the vehicle, he had the responsibility to let us know who was littering, but as he failed to cooperate with us, he now has to stump up the cash.

“Whether it is littering, fly tipping or spitting, making our streets look dirty is just something we don’t stand for and if we catch you, we will fine you.”
