Members of Street Watch led by Sally Miller patrolled Hornchurch High Street Saturday evening as pubs reopened.

Following months of closure due to the Covid 19 pandemic, pubs, hairdressers, and barbers reopened their doors last Saturday the 4th of July across the borough.

Queues outside barbers were seen and budding punters were spotted waiting for the pub doors to reopen.

Sally and her team of volunteers patrolled the streets from 6-8.30pm walking along the High Street as an extra presence on our streets.

She told the Havering Daily: “It was very busy with lots of people who had clearly been drinking but there weren’t any problems. There was a strong police presence with officers patrolling on foot and in vans to make sure there was no trouble.”

Most pubs had additional security and the outdoor facilities were used.

Locals had reported The Rising in Sun in Hornchurch as a crowd gathered outside that were not believed to be social distancing.

Sally added: “Council licensing officers were out and about on Saturday evening and they visited The Rising Sun, the pub willingly complied and closed its doors for an hour and a half to move the crowd on.

“The Chequers had issues with people urinating outside. The pub then installed a portaloo to deal with the issue.

“On the whole most people were generally well behaved and there weren’t many issues.”
