Local schools win buildings improvement cash.

Eight primary and secondary schools across Hornchurch & Upminster are to get vital buildings upgrades after the Education Secretary announced today the latest batch of successful bids for the Condition Improvement Fund (CIF).

£434 million of CIF money will be channelled into 1476 projects across the country in 2020-21 to make sure school buildings are safe and in good working order.

In addition, Government has committed to a crucial new ten-year rebuilding programme for schools. This will be an ambitious programme, replacing poor condition and ageing school buildings, with modern, energy efficient designs, transforming education for thousands of pupils.

The Department for Education will start next year with those 50 schools in the most need of repair, supported by over £1 billion in capital funding. Full details of those projects will be confirmed in the autumn.

Hornchurch and Upminster MP Julia Lopez, said, ‘The need for better school facilities and the burden of maintenance costs are issues raised often with me on local school visits. I am so pleased that those local schools most in need of a cash boost are now getting one. This CIF funding is just the start of what the government wants to do to improve education facilities over the next decade, with ambitious long-term plans to give children the best environments in which to learn. My team and I will be working with schools in the coming years to make sure Hornchurch & Upminster gets our share of this important investment.’

Alongside the start of this new rebuilding programme, half a billion pounds of additional capital funding will be provided to the school system this year to help support essential maintenance projects. This comes on top of over £1.4 billion in school condition funding already committed in 2020-21, including the Condition Improvement Fund.

In a further important announcement for our critical post-16 colleges, £200 million of the £1.5 billion of capital funding for further education (FE) colleges will be brought forward to this year to ensure FE colleges in England can undertake immediate remedial work to upgrade the condition of their buildings and estates.
